Why Aln Valley Railway Is Special
Aln Valley Railway stands out because it is still visibly developing. Unlike some larger heritage railways where the visitor experience feels complete and polished, Aln Valley has the appeal of an active restoration site where the story is still unfolding.
-
A railway being rebuilt
The project aims to restore part of the former branch line between Alnwick and Alnmouth, giving visitors a direct view of railway preservation in progress.
-
Northumberland railway identity
The railway helps tell the story of Alnwick’s historic rail connection to the East Coast Main Line at Alnmouth.
-
Lionheart Station
The modern visitor base at Lionheart Station gives the railway a practical home for train rides, events, museum displays and restoration work.
-
Good family scale
The site is manageable for families and visitors who want a shorter railway visit rather than a full-day preserved line journey.
About Aln Valley Railway
The original Alnwick branch opened on 5 August 1850, connecting Alnwick with the main line at Alnmouth. For more than a century it served the town, local passengers and goods traffic before passenger services ended in January 1968 and the line closed completely later that year.
The modern preservation project was created to restore a railway presence to Alnwick and, in the longer term, to rebuild towards Alnmouth. Because the original Alnwick station site and parts of the original trackbed were no longer available, the preservation railway developed Lionheart Station as its new operational base.
